Operational Workflow

Ship Recycling Process

Baraka Ship Recycling Yard involves a coordinated set of processes and procedures to ensure safe arrival, handling, and recycling of decommissioned vessels.

Pre-Arrival & Documentation

  • Execute MOA between yard and ship owner
  • Obtain NOC from MOI and open Letter of Credit
  • Collect all vessel documents, certificates, and declarations

Ship Recycling Plan (SRP) Preparation

  • Collect existing IHM report and analyze ship structure
  • Prepare preliminary SRP for regulatory submission
  • Define scope of dismantling, hazmat handling, and safety protocols

Ship Arrival & Landing

  • Manage vessel arrival at anchorage with safety agency coordination
  • Complete regulatory inspection, safe entry permit, and PODA signing
  • Secure landing approval, appoint beaching master, and land the vessel

Post-Landing Inspection & Permits

  • Conduct secondary inspection and ensure safe ship access
  • Appoint safety team, share worker lists, and verify oil removal
  • Obtain hot work permits, safe entry permits, and cutting permission from MOI

IHM Survey & Final SRP

  • Update or prepare full IHM report (sampling, lab testing, and VSCP)
  • Incorporate hazmat findings into final Ship Recycling Plan
  • Analyze actual ship structure and finalize dismantling strategy

Hazardous Material Management

  • Collect and store Part I hazmat within designated facility zones
  • Transfer Part II materials to DoE-approved disposal vendors
  • Route Part III items through approved reuse and recycling pathways

Ship Dismantling & Block Handling

  • Dismantle clean blocks using barge-mounted and shore cranes
  • Clean oil tanks and engine room components under authorized hot work permits
  • Process oily blocks in designated areas with OWS water treatment

Completion & Review

  • Declare recycling completion and obtain safety agency certificate
  • Finalize material calculations and compile all process records
  • Evaluate operations against SRP/SRFP and update procedures for future cycles

Skill Development

Safety Induction Training

Mandatory for all workers before entering the yard. Covers PPE usage, emergency procedures, fire safety, and hazard identification.

Hazardous Material Handling

Specialized certification program for workers dealing with asbestos, PCBs, lead paint, and other toxic substances found in end-of-life vessels.

Oxy-Fuel Cutting & Welding

Technical training on gas cutting, hot work permits, confined space operations, and fire watch protocols for structural dismantling.

Crane & Heavy Equipment Operation

Licensed operator training for mobile cranes, forklifts, and winch systems used in lifting and transporting heavy ship sections.

First Aid & Emergency Response

Regular first aid certification, emergency evacuation drills, and rescue technique training for incident preparedness.

Environmental Awareness

Training on waste segregation, spill containment, water and soil protection measures, and environmentally responsible disposal practices.
